Alan Cumming is an award-winning actor, singer, writer, producer and director. He recently starred in an acclaimed one-man staging of Macbeth on Broadway, and appears on the Emmy Award-winning television show The Good Wife. He won a Tony Award for his portrayal of the Emcee in the Broadway musical Cabaret, a role he has reprised in 2014. He hosts PBS Masterpiece Mystery and has appeared in numerous films, including Spy Kids, Titus, X2: X-Men United, The Anniversary Party, Any Day Now and Eyes Wide Shut. He is also the author of a novel, Tommy's Tale. Dies ist nicht eine jener unsäglichen Schauspiel-Autobiographien, in denen zum hundertsten Mal nichts erzählt wird. Ganz im Gegenteil. Dies ist die verstörend ehrliche und unfassbare Geschichte eines Jungen, der mit einem gewalttätigen Vater auskommen muss, und der viel später, als Erwachsener, herausfindet, dass die Geheimnisse seiner Familie noch tiefer vergraben sind als man es sich vorstellen kann. Alan Cumming gehört zu den profiliertesten, mutigsten und besten Schauspielern im englischen Film und Theater, und dieses Buch zeigt, dass er auch ein wunderbarer Erzähler ist.
Die Biografie war bereits weit vor dem Veröffentlichkeitsdatum hochgelobt. Ich hatte sie vorbestellt und war skeptisch, aber auch sehr gespannt. Skeptisch, da es ja auch genügend Schauspielerbiografien gibt, die nicht so gut gelungen sind oder gar langweilen. Da ich aber schon frühere Werke von Alan Cumming kannte, war meine Skepsis gering.Als ich das Buch in den Händen hielt, fing ich sofort an, es zu lesen. Und ich war einfach nur begeistert, auch wenn die Lebensgeschichte von Alan Cumming weiß Gott nicht lustig ist. Umso mehr ist es meines Erachtens ein Wunder, dass er zu so einem positiven, netten Menschen geworden ist. Ein Zeichen wahrer Stärke!
