This book was chosen by a member of my book group otherwise I may never have read it. At the time of reading I was holidaying in Broome and the Kimberley country in Western Australia. Definitely the right time and place. Whilst the writing style was not of a high quality the narrative was mesmerising. The emotive descriptions of the author's experiences with her husband's indigenous family was intimate and informative. The descriptions of the individuals humourous and reverent at the same time. And the land itself became an important character in the story, Being an Australian the objective explanation of how the anglo saxons insidiously stripped this proud and ancient civilisation of it's heritage and dignity bought me to my shame rather than beat me with it. The surprise was that the Moriaty family business was responsible for things that I see regularly like the uniforms of the Qantas flight attendants and those that I have marvelled at in the past - the painted plane! Being a mother I admired Ros enormously at her courage in taking her babies into a place where sanitation was not as we know it in the suburbs. I found Ros very generous in her story telling - her frankness in sharing her fears and short comings. There is so much to like in this book but the standout was the quotes at the beginning of each chapter. The use of the language and the poetry of the translations was quite moving. I would thoroughly recommend people from any where in the world to read this book. An insight into the lives of brave and noble people.

This book is two stories entwined; the story of the author accompanying women Aboriginal Elders to a sacred Law gathering, and the story of her own family's life with a foot in both Aboriginal and white Australia. The emphasis on story is the book's great strength; the issues of Aboriginal displacement, disadvantage and Stolen Generations are incredible complex, but Ros simply tells the stories without apportioning blame or offering simplistic solutions. We are simply drawn into the story, catching a glimpse of the warmth of community she experienced, as well as the pain of the women Elders who fear their Law wisdom will die with them. Photos from the Moriarty collection are an additional pleasure. This book was appreciated by my Book Club and subsequently donated as a set to our local library.

If you intend to read this text be aware that the person who wrote it, whilst claiming to respect the indigenous culture of her family, also describes the commercial use of indigenous art on bedding and curtains. It is not so much a text about Listening to Country as the memoir of a very ordinary person living a very ordinary life. If you are looking for insights into Country and Culture, this is not the text for you.

Really enjoyed "Listening to Country" as it gave me a better understanding of the Aboriginal perspective of their culture , future and connection to country. The wisdom of the elder women and their concerns for the younger members in the community was refreshing and thought provoking. As a white, Anglo-Saxon immigrant to Australia, it is always a visible problem as to what might be a solution to the difficulties that surround the Aborigines, caught between two societies, "Listening to Country" helped to bridge that gap.

some of this book was interesting, but a lot of it not, it chopped and changed all over the place, and didn't really seem to get to any point, the spiritual side of it was meaningless to me, and the sections about the writers own children read like one of those chirstmas letters we all get from rellies and friends about their over acheiving kids.
